I won the 2010 nano. But 50k wasn't enough to finish the novel, so I'm just going to finish the first draft nano-style. I don't mind having a rubbish first draft. I resist writing the first draft, but love the editing part when my inner editor can go wild. But getting words on paper/screen is murder.
I wanted to do it when I heard about it it about a year ago, but NanoWrimo became another thing I was afraid I wouldn't finish. I decided that if I was ever going to finish my first novel I'd better get started on that. I have had many starts, but not quite, a finish. I think your videos have reminded me what I love about writing, so for that, I thank you sir. I look forward to much more.
I've often been tempted by NaNoWriMo but the fates have never conspired to make November a suitable time to really go after it. I agree with you that the time pressure can almost create more problems than it solves by forcing things. My first completed novel took me about ten years. My second one took about three months, but ended up sucking. I'm hoping the current one will come in at about 6 months and be better than those prior. Anyway...enough about me. You rock!
I didn't win, either. I'm at about 12,000 words. I agree with you; I enjoy going back and editing as I go along, too. I've decided to keep going. I'm not stopping until this manuscript is finished. I have many other ideas that I would like to pursue, but I MUST finish this one.
Very interesting video. I was feeling bad about totally sucking in the nano contest but I feel better now cause I too liked writing my story even though I didnt finish it. Nano made me nervous and I shouldnt have been.
Great vids and I will be doing nano again with a whole new attitude next year! :)
I'm a slow writer. On a good day I can get 500 words out, but mostly it's only 100. I spent too much time editing and over-thinking things. I've enjoyed NaNo because it's allowed me to just write, without worrying about a chapter guide or having to plan out what's going to happen in the next scene. I plan on using this style of writing for the rest of the year.
Without NaNo, I wouldn't have a nearly finished novel. So I'll be doing it again next year.
