Ronnie Hawkins sings "Matchbox", from 1961. Hawkins was ahead of his time, and the 'heavier' sound gives this a feel much later than '61.

  • Wow! I remember the Beatles covered this tune in the 60s ... and I saw pro-wrestler George Ringo (the Wrestling Beatle) @ Chicago's International Amphitheater (back of da yards) enter the ring strumming a guitar and dancing around to this song! (The BEATLES version of course.)

  • @WytZox1 Interesting...

  • You got that right about the 'heavy'-for- '61 sound! Alas, I own only the Rhino compilation of Ronnie & the Hawks, but the treatment they give to 'Sick And Tired' is also unique for that time. I still don't know if it's an electric mandolin or a Telecaster I hear on that one; it makes me think of what Zeppelin would do 15 years later with early rock 'n' roll tunes. Oh that Robbie Robertson! Not as ferocious as on Bo Diddley covers, but still tasty playing under the influence of Roy Buchanan.

  • Thanks for the interesting comment. I'll have to take a listen to Sick & Tired. Also diificult to believe 'Who Do You Love' is 1963 - the same year Johnny Cymbal was singing 'Teenage Heaven'...

  • I'm pretty sure I was conceived on a night after my parents danced to his show... Mid 60's Russellville, Arkansas.

    Yeeeeeee Haaaaaaw

  • ...the love child of Ronnie H !?!

  • Did you ever find ronnie's version of "ruby Baby"

  • Ronnie lives in Lakefield Ontario about 180 kilometers from where I live. In the 60's when he lived here in Mississauga Ontario, about 3 kilometers from where I am, he had John Lennon as his house guest for awhile. He pops up every now and then on TV. His hair and beard are snow white.

  • reminds me of those Texas Slappers.....

    :O

  • It's those double guitar breaks that do it for me
