I can't fit a lot of books in it. I pack a lunch, umbrella, a few odds and ends, power supply, and two or three small books, some papers or reports . It's not like a regular canvas backpack that you can fit a lot of stuff into and will bulk out. It just doesn't bulk out very much. The main purpose of it, from my experience, is to comfortably carry the laptop and some other things, which is does well. I don't think it will work well if you have to carry a lot of big books around in it.

The bottom has a slight padding to it. The sack that the laptop goes into also has padding on the bottom of that. So, directly underneath the laptop has the most padding. I don't know if it's enough padding to save the laptop from a few feet off the ground, but definitely has protection there from usual bumps and knocks.
