Benjamina was named after one of our favorite animal liberation artists - Benjamin Zephaniah (http://www.benjaminzephaniah.com/). We had just been listening to Benjamin's music, to his voice; we were extraordinarily inspired by his unique way of speaking about animals, about vegetarianism... So infatuated we were with the guy that when I stumbled upon this tiny miserable turtle (wait to hear about her life), we thought she deserved the name of a great soul, a grandiose name, the name of someone who would have done the exact thing we did: bring her home and try to make her life as comfortable as possible, even if just for a few weeks...
By following the link below you will find the letter I sent friends when Benjamina Zephaniah died. Following the obituary are the comforting messages we received. I was devastated, but the words friends sent in lifted me up a bit... Made me realize there were folks out there who could relate, understand my extreme sorrow over the suffering, the loneliness that Benjamina had endured, and my feeling of powerlessness, my feelings of guilt, even, over not having done more for her...

Turtles are such dear, sweet beings. And so fragile in a way. She died being loved. Bless you for rescuing her.
