Dublin beat Galway to win their first football championship since 1963. Under the management of Kevin Heffernan, this was the beginning of an exciting era for 'The Dubs', although the match itself may not be remembered as a classic. The major turning point in the game was probably Paddy Cullen's second half penalty save from Galway's Liam Sammon.

Many of 'Heffo's Army', as the Dubs supporters were known, had spilled out of the Hill 16 end behind the goal with minutes still remaining in the match. Dublin captain Sean Doherty and his team took a few minutes to get through the celebrating supporters onto the Hogan Stand to receive the Sam Maguire Cup. The banner-carrying, scarf-clad Dublin supporters owed a lot in image to cross-channel soccer but brought a whole new colour to G.A.A.. Despite the Dubs supporters constant chants for 'Heffo', the Dublin manager Kevin Heffernan stayed in the background.
