The original isn't very good. Look at "Tears for Fear" and his "Mad World" and take the Gary Jules cover... His cover isn't a good cover, because he lost the spirit of the 80's. Here, Nouvelle Vague give a new spirit to a song whom had an "undefined" spirit.
This is the way I like this cover, and I disapproved all the criticals comments.

i have to admit, this isn't the best video of this song (the quality isn't good either), but this band is pretty good live. it's either a hit or miss.
