Video not available in Germany. Catlins (sometimes referred to as The Catlins Coast) comprises an area in the southeastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. The area lies between Balclutha and Invercargill, straddling the boundary between the Otago and Southland regions. The Catlins, a rugged, sparsely populated area, features a scenic coastal landscape and dense temperate rainforest, both of which harbour many endangered species of birds. Its exposed location leads to its frequently wild weather and heavy ocean swells, which are an attraction to big-wave surfers.The Catlins economy relies heavily on dairy farming and fishing. The region's early whaling and forestry industries have long since died away, along with the coastal shipping that led to several tragic shipwrecks. Only some 1,200 people now live in the area, many of them in the settlement of Owaka. Music in this video is Edge Hill from Groove Armada.

dude i went there like 3 weeks ago cause we traveled all round nz and it was amazing..fuck Auckland and gay north island it's soo boring and so busy..to me this is the real nz.

@lbfortress Hallo! The Catlins are known for their harsh weather. So, don't go there for the climate, but nature is wonderful. Remember the Catlins have summer when the other half of the world has winter. I was there in February. Enjoy! Charlotte

Hi Leanda,
The road is probably Owaka Highway coming from the Catlins shore towards Balclutha.
You'll find it w/ Google Maps: SH1 Balclutha NZ, and then go a bit south.

Hi Simon, you MUST go! Was just passing through coming from Stewart Isl to Otago Peninsula (next video). Stay at least 3 days. Never mind the rough weather: you Kiwis are used to that. Groetjes, Charlotte
