What are the key characteristics of Conceptual Art and why has Conceptual Art been termed as "Modernism's nervous breakdown"? This lecture will situate the rise of Conceptual Art in the late Sixties where artists world-wide lost faith in painting and the notions of progress modernism stood for. This lecture will also present arguments to explain why art, during this period, became a way to question the meaning of art and in so doing, created an equivalent of a scientific paradigm shift in the world of art. It will conclude by explaining why after such a shift, the old ways of thinking about and making art were no longer possible.

Main artists: Marcel Duchamp, Joseph Beuys, Piero Manzoni, Yves Klein, Richard Long, On Kawara, Xu Bing, Ai Wei Wei.
