Political scandals have come to dominate the news media, campaigns, and government itself. Hardly a day goes by that media do not report new revelations concerning some alleged moral or impropriety. Political scandal coverage is as much a news topic as Hollywood scandals and sports figures ethical lapses. Despite the increased attention to political scandals, very little systematic research has been done on scandals. This talk will report results from a study of all U.S. Senate incumbent scandals for the years 1974-2008. Some of the questions discussed include:
• Do candidates with scandals experience negative electoral consequences?
• Why/how do some candidates with scandals lose reelection while others win?
• Do different types of scandals affect elections differently?
• Are there more scandals today than in the past, why or why not?
