Iran sent a former soccer star's mistress to the gallows, hanging the woman who had been jailed for more than eight years for her role in a deadly love triangle that left the athlete's wife dead.

Shahla Jahed, 40, who was the "temporary wife" of Nasser Mohammad Khani, was hanged at sunrise in a Tehran prison, Iran's official news agency, IRNA, reported.

According to reports, Jahed tearfully prayed and shouted for her life to be spared before the victim's son pulled the chair she was standing on as Khani watched.

Initially, Jahed denied any role in the 2002 fatal stabbing of Khani's wife, Laleh Saharkhizan. Jahed, however, later confessed then took back the confession, sparking an outcry from human rights activists.

There were "strong grounds to believe that Shahla Jahed did not receive a fair trial, and may have been coerced into making a 'confession' during months of detention in solitary confinement," Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's director for the Middle East and North Africa, told the BBC.

The "temporary marriage" arrangement allows men to legally cheat on their wives for an agreed upon period of time and a fee. Men are allowed up to four wives under Iranian law, while woman can only have one husband.

While Khani escaped adultery charges, he did receive 74 lashes for allegedly smoking opium with Jahed. Khani was held as a suspect in the murder, but was released after Jahed confessed, the BBC reported.

Jahed was sentenced to death in 2004. The verdict was briefly overturned in 2008 for "procedural flaws," but was later reinstated the following year.
