Public Television station WMHT TV in Schenectady, New York signing off its analog transmitter. The station will now transmit solely in digital mode on Ch. 34, although the station will continue to use 17 as it's 'virtual channel'. The station signed on March 26th, 1962 and was the second public TV station in New York State behind WNET in New York. WMHT was a charter member of the NET network, the forerunner of today's PBS.

This pre-recorded message began playing at Noon on April 16th, 2009 and looped until sign off. I was caught a little off guard, as the station seemingly dropped the carriers a couple of minutes earlier than expected, although the station did stay on until it's normal 1am sign-off time. WMHT is the first Albany market station to discontinue analog broadcasting, while the other local stations opted to remain on until the June '09 cutoff date (although WNYT & WCWN are running reduced visual power).

  • What model TV was that?

  • Sony KV-2654R - 1983 vintage

  • this is unnessicary bullshit! Digital FAILS! BRING BACK ANALOG!

  • DTV has it pros & cons - but I agree analog transmission should not have been discontinued. However, in this day & age just the fact the free over-the-air TV still exists amazes me. I think it's days are numbered altogether.

  • 2:19 - the death of an analog television broadcast after 47 years. It's sad in a way.

Thanks for sharing this moment with us.

  • Nice slide music at the beginning and end of the video! It reminds me of what they used to play in the background of those "Community Info" cable TV channels. Just one nit-pick: the possessive "its" does not use an apostrophe -- as in "signing off *its* analog transmitter", etc. Sorry, that's just one of my pet peeves! :-)

  • Love the old Sony Trinitron TVs. Built well and with a great picture. Those will still be good for playing vintage video games.

  • thats a nice tv

  • DTV is a conspiracy to make comcast money! And if you want to have a portable TV you have to buy a fancy expensive thing with a plan rather than a watchman with an attena.

  • i am pissed about analog TV being shut off! now a lot of people who were far out from TV transmissions but were still able to pick up stations watchably can't get anything because once you're under a certain signal threshold you get nothing at all with digital. with analog it could still be viewed, even if it looked bad.

  • @NorthRiverTV All I know is if they do the same to radio I am gonna be pissed beyond words

  • wowpsa !! good
