@jiveturkey25 You can read Roth's entry on Wikipedia. Also read, "I'll Cry Tomorrow," which is much more gritty than the film. Alcoholism is horrible. The film might leave you feeling Lillian conquered it, but actually, she didn't completely. Try to find her records online or in specialty record stores; she was actually quite good. She did not have a great voice, but was a very gifted story-teller in how she acted out her songs.

@defundthewar What ever happened to her, her career?

Good luck on your detox. I stopped taking OxyContin, just therapeutic levels (10 mg a day, plus four 5 mg IRs) after about 1.5 years, and I had horrific pain in my legs for nearly month and trouble sleeping. Your withdrawal sounds much, much worse, but you know that the drug itself causes pain after a while, right? And it takes more and more of it to KILL that pain. Congrats on your courage.

@Rouben19 CONGRATULATIONS on Kicking the pain killers. People don't understand what they do for a person. At first you need them for the pain then life throws a curve ball and they help with the inner pain. I pray you keep the inner strength needed to stay away from them. Pray to GOD and ask that he sends an Angel to minister to your soul if the temptation gets too hard to deal with. Believe me it works.. Keep up the good work!

This would have you believe Lillian's first drink in her life was at this moment, but in her own autobiography, she took her first swig of booze when very young, during Prohibition. It was made of fermented prunes, of all things. Real bathtub gin, as they called it. She took to alcohol in an instant, and with a vengeance.

@binkle1 thank you, it has been about 5 months now with no meds at all - life is so much better!

Jo Van Fleet is brilliant!
I just went through a near death withdrawl from oxy-contin and all I could think about was this film and the scene where she is screaming in the bed - I didn't scream but it was painful beyond painful! 37 days off and living again...
