  • Some information on the features: the hole directly below the bridge looks to be the hot spot. I'd guess about 15-20 feet wide. This part of the feature is around 1:38 in the video. The construction team told me that the feature was designed to run best from 650cfs to around 1100cfs (probably gets more fun above this!! not recommended for beginners). Looks like the grand opening won't happen until work on the bridge is finished.

Construction for the bridge is not expected to be completed until the fall. That's too long! The city has said a few times that the standing wave will be open in the spring. The construction crews usually take Saturday and Sunday off and never work when the water is up, it's wet or it's too muddy.

  • @refidnasb1 The contractor was ARC Contracting Services Inc. There is a different contractor for the Santa Fe Trail (over the 1890 Carnegie-built trestle). A city engineer (Mr. Lim, not a paddler) thinks the eddy current is too strong. He wants to obstruct it with riprap projections. I could see where a riprap ramp along the s.w. edge of the pool might facilitate take-out, but feel that the safest eddy pool is a large, unobstructed one where paddlers can stage. The current seems okay as is.

Its fine the way it is. Since youtube will not allow direct links in comments enter "g55TQmEcxYo" into google without the quotes to see what it looks like at 1100cfs. Perfect. That's the youtube code for the video. Neutering the design and taming it defeats the purpose.

  • Too bad downstream a short distance the meat plant has a river of blood flowing into this river.

  • Too bad the city wont allow anyone to ride it, as it an amazing feature...

Great meeting you at the wave the other day. The man you spoke with, Tony Anderson, is with City of Dallas Parks. The design consultant for the hydraulics is Shane Sigle P.E. of Recreation Engineering and Planning in Boulder, CO. I was on hand on the afternoon of December 22, 2010, to see the first water spill over the feature and to push Shane's boat into the water for the trial surf. He launched down the flight of small steps on the west bank, just above the second wave.

  • FYI I went and talked to some of the construction crews today. The head guy on the project (at least while I was there) said the area surrounding the site is closed during the construction, so even though the river is legally navigable and open, it is not advisable to launch at the construction site. I had to man up and keep my boat in the car =[. We need more public discussion on this feature. I will be posting contact information soon so we can develop a strong relationship with the company.

  • Cool stuff. I'm stoked on this feature, I was a raft guide for the NOC for three years and a green narrows regular; relocated to the Big D for work. I'm 15 minutes away from this bad boy, I'll be there as much as possible in my orange biscuit.
