In this exchange, Professors Faisal Devji and Paul Apostolidis discuss Islamic and Christian fundamentalism, two kinds of extreme religious practice that have recently found new expression in the age of mass communication, and have grown increasingly widespread as a result. Profs. Devji and Apostolidis together track the historical trajectories of the resurgence in radical Christian and Islamic extremism, and thus bring to the surface underlying features of the most prevalent forms of religious fundamentalism today.
Dr. Faisal Devji is a professor of history at the New School University. Dr. Paul Apostolidis is a professor of political science at Whitman College, where he also serves as the Judge and Mrs. Timothy A. Paul Chair of Political Science. This discussion was held in Classics 110 at the University of Chicago, April 16th, 2009. Sponsored by the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory (3CT) as part of their Identity & Politics Lecture Series.
