It's actually made from python skin. If you go to "stone street" off of Kokasai there's a sanshin store on the 2nd floor right when you enter the street. You can see pictures of it being made and you can see the size of the snake it's made from.

the japanese samisen is made of cat or dog skin while the Okinawan one the one theyre useing is made of habu or snake skin and its pretty expensive i got a good deal i got it for $450 cuz im living in Okinawa but they cost mainly about $500-$600 and if you want to buy it and your not in Okinawa or Japan you have to buy it online and pay the shipping and handling

yep, the Sanshin is also known as the Okinawan Banjo. Banjos, Shamisens, and Sanshins all have a material covering the hollow body of the instrument which creates a unique sound.

I think the Okinawan sanshin - and Japanese shamisen - are more akin to banjo than guitar. Very nice song(though I agree that these young women could stand a little more practice, no disrespect intended.)
