Dear_Diary_20111021 - Mutually Assured Destruction of a Different Kind

This is my Daily Diary for 21st Oct 2011.

Our modern monetary system has a currency supply that is based on debt. I feel that perhaps that is the basic reason why we have been so merrily consuming away and reproducing away. If it were not for the false sense of abundance that has been given by this ever increasing debt based currency supply, we would have faced obstacles to easy life and would have neither produced so many children, nor kept increasing our consumption level with such abandon as we have done in the last several decades / few centuries.

Of course, we have the energy subsidy that is provided by hydrocarbons, that is allowing us to continue on this path. But certainly, we would not have quite run through our oil heritage quite so fast, if it were not for this system that allows us to amass vast amounts, in fact, target-less amounts of wealth.

There would have been less 'growth', less 'progress', less consumption, less of a population explosion... and we would have moved up the consumptive path rather slowly, perhaps, in time for us to mature psychologically and spiritually, while we matured technically. Perhaps, that would also have given us options to solve our problems, which we are not likely to find, when so many problems, all related to our over-consumption (via over-consumption per capita, as well as over-population), hit us in the coming decades -- all more or less together.

This thought-stream was triggered while I was watching Part II of 'Money As Debt'. I was also struck by the apt abbreviation -- MAD -- which, apart from really being mad, is also an abbreviation for Mutually Assured Destruction... It seems that if we not get into MAD mode via the nuclear weapons, we quite certainly will, through the Debt based money, that has already shown in 2008, how delicate the situation is, for us.

What is worse is that there is very little, if any, institutional effort being made at finding an alternative monetary system, which can hopefully be more sustainable for us as well as for our future generations, and also for our fellow beings on Gaia. It is of utmost importance that all those who are able to see this, make enough noise for others to start focussing on this monstrosity of our own making.

I guess there is still hope. Internet has opened many avenues of knowledge gathering. Hopefully, pioneering works like this one by Paul Grignon will stimulate enough work which will ultimately get the hundredth monkey to convert!
