How to bow - Horse Trick Training - Clicker

Here is an explanation of how to teach a horse the bow. Horse Trick Training is a lot of fun and good for a horse-rider-relationship. Everybody can do it!

The horse is a 9 year old stock horse gelding called "Jay".

How do you get them to pick up their hoof on their own?

@alwayshorseCRAZY The first few times we exercised I helped him with a hand to lift his hoof - after a few times he understood and did it on his own

ive tried this and my horse just backs up.....how do i stop that?

@hayleycrouch you can practice with him in a corner of a small paddock or a box where he can't back up! But stay safe and make sure you are in a safe spot. Once he has learnt how to bow he will probably stop to back up

I tried it with my horse, well the only thing he does is trying to reach it, but I guess he thinks: Can't reach it don't need it.

@hyperfocus2011 Well, I normally use a combination of cues. I use a word such as 'bow' and then gently touch his leg with a whip from above. I like to have more than once cue because depending on the environment (e.g. lots of background noise) one cue might be stronger than the other.
