The Kuleshov Effect
(first demonstrated in 1918)

It is not the content of the images in a film which is important, but their combination.
Viewers project their own emotional reactions to this sequence of images.

  • I don't know what this has to do with the Kuleshov-effect.

  • answer: the same image of the boy doing math brackets the beginning and the end of the sequence, yet we interpret it quite differently.

  • The Kuleshov Effect is the idea that two shots show in sequence have some sort of connection to each other. Ie, shots of two different people in sequence talking, audience assumes the two people are next to each other.

  • NO TIENE NADA QUE VER CON EL EFECTO KULESHOV!

  • you don't understand it

  • I like the same image of the boy doing math at the start and finish. At the beginning, all I saw was a boy who was having a hard time with his equation, at the end I saw a boy who looked upset as if to think, 'what is the world coming'. On a funny note, he was almost thinking, 'man with all the problems in the world and I have this dam equation to do!'

Though I did think it was a little long to show a kuleshov effect, I find restrict the length of the clip to around 20-60 secs will be better!

  • The original Kuleshov experiment had this structure: B-A-C-A-D-A

  • This is a very nice take on the Kuleshov effect, and in any case, this video shows how a theme can be dwelt upon for about 5 minutes, with just stills and repetitive music - and yet convey something powerful! Great work

  • what???????

  • man's face, lady in a coffin, a bowl of soup, and a child playing with a toy bear. That was the original Kuleshov effect.

  • I dont think its a good kuleshov effect. What I mean is that the link between images are somehow vague. The human brain is the only thing here that is disposed to automaticaly combine the images, but with this video we have to invent these links. I dont mean that it is not interesting, but thats not the primary theorical idea of the Kuleshov experiment. (!?!?!?!)
