Bottom Trawling is very harmful to ocean floor species, especially deep sea corals. The Finding Coral Expedition uses its small submersibles to investigate the impact that trawling has on corals.

  • I use a trawl net for shrimp in the summer and fall often times, yet we drag over sand, not coral, also, when " bycatch " is fairly thick, we dump the bag into an aerated vat to separate the catch where the bycatch is released alive !

  • Yes, impacts are a factor of both the gear used and where it is used. There are ways to mitigate some impacts, such as bycatch separation devices or by trawling only in areas of high natural disturbance - but when it comes to corals and sponges, the only real way to avoid impacts is to not use damaging gears in coral or sponge areas to begin with.
