no it's a reference to Elvis. Amphetamines were no longer so popular among the younger successful musicians in the early '70s because the effects of cocaine are superior to those from amphetamines. also, the King could get his amphetamines and barbiturates and pain killers from doctors' scripts, so it was legal. the King was strongly against 'illegal' drugs and even offered to help President Nixon fight the 'drug epidemic.' find a photo of the King w/shades and Nixon. it's funny.

Counting Crows did a great cover of it too. Much more upbeat but an awesome song no matter how its presented.

..the whole song is brilliant ..outstanding ..laid back but important..flows like the best poetry...and hums life..

"We flew straight across that river bridge,

Last night at half past two

The switchman waved his lantern goodbye

And so long as we went rolling through

Billboards and truckstops pass by the Grievous Angel

And now I know just what I have to do"...etc ..etc....just keep it playing...

Love the line '...and I saw my devil' and how the key and pitch changes just for this moment, it is ethereal.

No debate. They themselves have said so in interviews, unless they're lying, of course.

yeah, that really sucks though cause all three of them are some of the best musicians of all time and they could've made some great music together, one example of them working together being Wild Horses. too bad personal differences had to get in the way.

Keith Richards said Parsons was a 'junkie'. LOL Now that's the pot calling the kettle if I ever heard it. Actually, Richards and Parsons were great friends till Parsons died.. Jagger was jealous that Keith was spending so much time with Parsons and he got all 'pissy' about it and Parsons left. Richards says that Parsons had a huge influence on him and his music.
