Two years after a devastating earthquake killed 200,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless in Haiti , the International Rescue Committee continues to aid survivors.
More than 500,000 people remain in crowded camps and settlements as the country slowly recovers and rebuilds. Conditions in the camps are deteriorating because funding for vital services like water, sanitation and protection is dwindling.

After the devastating earthquake in Haiti, people everywhere were truly moved to do something. Here on Vashon, some folks quickly put together a benefit for some orphanages that had "island connections". After the initial planning meeting I was inspired to pen this little ditty to use for the benefit. As always, I had lots of help and encouragement from my friends and neighbors on this.

THE WALLS COME DOWN

The world moves, under ground
The land drifts, the planet shifts
And the walls come down

In the city streets, in slums and towns
Buildings crumble, towers tumble
And the walls come down

Dust and rubble, concrete mounds
Mortar and clay and stone give way
And the walls come down

And the walls come down, And the walls come down
In the beat of a heart the world falls apart
And the walls come down

(BRIDGE)
For a fraction of a deathly quiet moment
They hold their breath and struggle to comprehend
The death and destruction, the horror and sorrow
How and why to survive till tomorrow

Then a voice calls out, under ground
Strangers and friends begin to dig in
And walls come down
A child cries out, an orphan now
A childless mother, they hold each other
And walls come down
The people start singing, how sweet the sound
Voices raised in Amazing Grace
As the walls come down
The world is moved, compassion profound
People open their hearts, open their arms
And the walls come down
(CHORUS)
Let the walls come down, Let the walls come down
Open your hearts, open your arms and let the walls come down
