IN 1881 David Kalakaua came to Bangkok to talk with King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) about forging global alliances as a means of resisting colonization. In 1960, Henri Lefebvre mused about being caught between two waves as a rhythmic analogy for modernity. So as I watched some waves break in Hawaii via my internet connection last week, with Thai royal festivities unfolding outside my window in Bangkok (December 2009), I decided to bring out my Henry Noa footage from my personal archive to reflect on the meaning of the 'nation'. The Lefebvre (1995) text says:
"A cloud hides the sun. Then, from anxiety, the vision was born...Wave follows wave, each wave like the other, and yet the waves which have passed are completely different from the waves which are to come. (128)"
Great conbination of ideas and fottage, you da man, do you stay in Hawaii?
