Shan Van Vocht. Anglicized spelling for Sean-bhean Bhocht [Ir., the poor old woman], a personification of Ireland current in the 18th century, perhaps derived from the Cailleach Bhéire. A song titled Shan Van Vocht, dated from the rising of the United Irishmen, 1798, has been described as the Marseillaise of Ireland.
