One man's trash in another man's treasure
Five short years ago, Robin and I did not even have $1,000 in our Emergency Fund. Why?? Because we had credit cards and equity in our home. In Dave Ramsey's book, Total Money Makeover, he talks about seven baby steps with # 1 being establishing a $1,000 emergency fund and I believe if you earn over $100,000 per year it should be $2,000.
We will discuss five ways to sell your stuff and get that emergency fund quickly. Let's start thinking about what we could sell.
1. Items in your spare bedrooms or basement
2. Old Electronics
3. Jewelry
4. Kitchen appliances -- How about that $300 juicer you just bought and only juiced for one week??
5. Items in your garage
6. Exercise Equipment
7. Kids toys
8. Clothes
9. Collectables -- My good friend, John Kulisich sold his baseball card collection for the down payment on his first home
10. Outdoor equipment to include: Boats, motorcycles, bikes, tools, hunting gear, fishing gear and the list goes on.
Here are five suggestions on how to sell your stuff in order of most profit to you.
1. Ebay -- The world's largest auction site. A private seller uses Ebay 's website and lists their item. If it is listed in auction, you can view the item and see how much it is going for and when the time ends. If you don't really want to spend the time to take pictures of the item, open a paypal account, take care of packaging and shipping, then consider taking your items to an Ebay powerseller in your area. We have the Blue Sage Merchant in Monument , Colorado. They do a free research for current Ebay market value of your treasure. They sell worldwide for you and handle all packaging and shipping. They take professional photos of your treasures and have the experience to guarantee an enticing and accurate auction. You can make up to 75% on a sale. I took some of Robin's old Barbie Dolls and clothes and will be getting a check for over $150.00.
2. Craigslist -- Your best classified advertising service. The seller lists their item and the website works just like any classified ad you saw in the newspaper. You list at home for free and for the buyer their product is just a click away. They allow you up to four pictures, once again all for free. Be careful with the time you have the buyer coming to your home and it would be smart to have more than just you at home when the buyer comes over.
3. Garage Sales -- "The Saturday morning assault"
4. Consignment Stores -- We have a store called Excess Threads, in Colorado Springs. Bring in clothes, purses, luggage, shoes, boots, hats, belts, etc. and they will pay you cash . Bring in 100 items and receive up to $100. You can clean out those closets and get organized at the same time. Robin and I are giving this a shot next weekend and I will write a post on our results.
5. Donating -- Another idea is donation items to Goodwill or a church. Consult your tax accountant for what you can write off.
For the next three lessons we are excited to have Jonni McKoy as our guest and she will be talking about cutting your food budget in half. You will not want to miss this best selling author's story and tips. Debt Free Squad "Challenge of the Week"
Make a list of everything you are willing to sell and those items that have good value use Ebay or Craigslist. Organize a neighborhood garage sale. When we lived in Mission Viejo, California we would have a huge street garage sale once a year, share the cost of advertisement and then have a barbecue.
Tell us in the comment section below about some of your biggest sales...
Matthew 6:19 -- "Do not store up yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal."
Matthew 19:21 -- "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Nobody who has ever been to a yard sale or flea market can dispute the truth of the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure."
