Rare sequence of night rail grinding by the Loram on the Reading and Northern in eastern Pennsylvania. Don't expect it back for a long time.

  • Awesome video! Call me dumb, but what exactly does this do?

  • The steel rail is a critical and valuable asset for the company, however all that weight running over it everyday causes wear and deformation. The rail grinder uses mechanical and or laser sensing detects these deformities, dips and wear then grinding stones are moved into place and reform the rail to it's proper shape. This brings the rail back to it's peak performance and increases the life of the rail as well as smooths out the train ride.

  • Oh thats awesome. Thanks for the information. and how often do we see this?

  • I wouldn't expect it back on this track for many years. Mainlines get ground every year or two.
