There's something wrong with my damn M5 - the heat seems to affect it... and going uphill doesn't seem to help my 50-180 time. Nor does traffic.

  • E39 M5's struggle a bit at Joburg altitude bud... fact of life.

The E39 M5 is very susceptible to heatsoak, and likes pulling the timing when intake temperatures soar. The fact that the intake temp sensors sit very close to the motor doesn't help this fact at all.

Ensure you always fill up with 95, and try getting an ECU remap done to change the intake temp parameters - or get an intake temp sensor relocation kit from somewhere like Beast Power, Discovery Automotive, or the likes.

  • Thanks for the info! I recently had the cats looked at and discovered that they were totally blocked. The have since been removed and I am on the lookout for someone that can do the ECU for me...

  • In the car's defence - this was done at 1,750m above sea level. I'll look at making a plan to get it to Sea Level and record the difference....

  • THERMOSTAT REMAINS OPEN

  • I belive it same problem that i have on my 2000 e39 m5. Check termostat first. Youre motor oil does not heat like it does. The workin temperature on s62 is 100-110 celsium. If youre temp. stay cold, you have less power, more fuel cons etc//

  • Common problem on the e39 m5 AND THERMOSTAT is usually the culprit. You idiot!!! Stop spreading false info!!

  • your engine oil pressure is slightly low, it could be your head gasket, thats what used to happen with 535i which i now own :D, it used to be kinda slow, then it turned out the gasket was to blame, anyway u should just get it check by bmw anyway,
