India's communications minister is due to meet internet and social media companies in order to discuss new guidelines on content.

The government wants to stamp out what it calls "objectionable material". Last week, in a private meeting with executives from Google and Facebook, he directed them to remove offensive and abusive speech online.

For many Indians, in the virtual world, this directive is seen as silencing their voice. As a result, sites like Twitter saw users responding angrily with many saying it is against India's democratic rights.

Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from New Dehli.

  • ban facebook.............lol its gonna b fun coz then only we gonna use orkut

  • @forgottenmemories63 Well, you Indians aren't stupid, so I already know the citizens wouldn't support it. That said? I hope your government actually listens to the people, and drop the idea entirely. Thats the thing about corrupt governments... they tend to push their own will on the country, regardless of what the citizens actually vote for.

For a perfect example of such, well... just take a look at the good old US Govt.. About as corrupt as you can get. Don't listen to any of us.

  • @forgottenmemories63 what's even funnier is that Modi is having Gujarat invest in Pakistan and having Gujarat itself become invested by the Chinese. Seems he knows what he's doing. I believe the party has matured much more than it had back in 2002.

  • @Ariana321 No Indians support this, Every Indian is against this, It's just the work of the Corrupt Government -_-

We Indians won't let this happen, Neither will we have to find ways to get around blocks because we won't have it in the first place !

  • Oh come on India, don't be douchebags. You know theres ALWAYS ways to get around those blocks you know, right? All you succeed in is making yourselves look like assholes. Let the people see what they want on the internet.

Besides, porn being legal helps to cuts back on rape.

  • @SuperUncleruckus How to manage the Growing Chinese Aggression ?

Vote for BJP who have a Greater set of Balls than the current Government.

  • If they block Porn, there will be hell to pay for it.

  • I think censoring the internet is the LEAST of our concerns in India, first we have to take care of the narrowing wealth disparity and how to manage with the growing Chinese aggression.

  • India appears to suffer from the same problem as the USA: old, technologically inept lawmakers overstepping their boundaries and dictating what citizens should or should not be allowed to access, based largely on their own prejudices and dangerous preconceptions.
