You do know that other religions try and practice this same thing too right? Abstinence isn't just a Christian thing. And isn't it a little weird that they wear a finger which essentially marries them to god? And if you use two forms of contraception, condoms and the pill, and the woman still becomes pregnant, isn't that a miracle or something?

This is a CHRISTIAN EVENT, hosted by a CHRISTIAN ministry. If you don't like CHRISTIAN VALUES.... don't go. Nobody forces these kids to attend. They want to make good choices and develop good moral sexual boundries. No, Symos, you can't keep people from getting horny, but you CAN limit your exposure to sexually explicit images, lyrics and situations. If these kids want to be pure, SUPPORT them, don't mock or ridicule the ministry that wants to help them make that decision.

As for encouraging the use of condoms, I believe that it gives kids a false sence of security. They think they are SAFE. In fact many people get pregnant using condoms and the aids virus is even smaller than sperm. THE ONLY WAY to avoid pregnancy and STDs is abstinence. However, if there is no absolute moral code or expectation of celibacy instilled in children and supported by a loving family and supportive celibate friends this is almost impossible.

I agree that abstinence ONLY education doesn't work. My oldest son (he is 17 now) has went to two of these events. What makes the difference is that he went WITH his church youth group. They ALL have made commitments to wait to get married to have sex. They encourage each other and their "peer pressure" is to stay pure. The kids in the group also have a firm moral foundation to start with in their Christian homes and families.

While I do agree with the risks and the fact that unplanned parenthood is definitely a bad thing, the fact is abstinence only education DOESN'T WORK. These teens are no less likely to have sex, and since no one bothered to tell them about contraceptives, the risk for STDs and pregnancy is actually higher. This isn't helping the kids. It's actually increasing the chances of what it claims to avoid.

"I'm 14, and I've already committed myself to my wife/husband who I don't even know yet!"
Right. Great Idea. Good thinking. Or, maybe, you can have premarital sex free of guilt or horror or shame, and still have a meaningful relationship with that person and maybe whoever comes next. Be smart about it, use contraception. Don't sleep around. Heck, stay abstinent if you really want to. Just make up your own mind about it. Don't let people "tell you what's right." Myself included in that statement.
