Freddie, my 11 year old cat, has an excellent command of the English language - particularly the word "Hello", which he says to us often in the middle of the night. This normally happens whenever he gets lonely or needs the toilet (he's got a tray inside, but prefers to go outside).

This audio was recorded between 430am and 500am on April 30 2010, when Freddie came to my bedroom door (which was closed - which he HATES). He wanted to go outside, but because it was dark I didn't let him, and ignored his calls. After over an hour, I finally gave up and let him out at around 5:45am, just as the sun was starting to rise.

The clearest "hello" meows can be heard at 0:11, 0:43, 1:05, 1:32 - 1:36, 1:53 - 1:56, 2:35, 2:44, 3:00, 3:17, 3:31 and 3:42.

Technical info: I recorded the audio using an Olympus DM-450 voice recorder, which I'd left on all night in "Voice Activation" mode (meaning it only recorded whenever it heard a noise). Unfortunately this means that some of Freddie's talking has been cut off at the beginning, but overall the results were amazing.

  • oh my what chatty pussy, it does sound like hello - how on earth do you sleep? Therese

  • Hi Therese. Thankfully he doesn't carry on like this every night, only when he feels "needy". He did it again last night for the first time in quite a while. It was around 5am, and I think that was because I forgot to give him his evening meal yesterday. I ignored him for about 20 minutes, then he jumped onto my bed. I invited him to get under the blankets and the noise ceased as he cuddled purring and settled down for some rest.

  • I was happy to see this! you hardly see anyone Else's cat who talks well. Our cats walk through the hall at night saying "Hellooooo" like this until we shout out "Where in here" then they answer with "Ooh".

They also know the words. "mom, Out, NOW! Hey"
