@JargonMcScruffy there's steam engine plans, kits and educational sites for steam engines that are tiny enough to fit in a hand, some that use bits that can be picked up in any hardware store, and machined with hand files and hacksaws. john-tom has many free plans, there's also some at sites that republish old plans from mechanix illustrated, along with motorcycle, toy, car, furniture and shop tool plans.
