  • It's a Scarlet chested Parrot, not a ' splendid parakeet'. This is coming form an Austrlian, who's seen them in the wild and has also bred them.

  • @thescabman

Neophema splendida, if you want to get technical. You are correct....different countries...different names!

  • This is a mutated scarlet chested parrot from australia. The pure bred is rare and is more naturally better than this lovely bird. It is a noephema like the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot, blue-winged ,elegant , rock and tuquoise parrot all from australia. The Bourke is different more like a stupid budgie but all Neophemas have shy beautiful temperaments.

  • This is not a mutation and displays the colours of the natural wild splendid. Bourkes are nothing like a budgie and certainly not stupid, they are still grass parakeets but are now reclassed as Neopsephotus rather than Neophema.

  • @Sags64 Youll find that it is genetically changed ,naturals are rare sorry. I also stated that budgies are stupid not bourkes. And im really only interested in coastal neophemas not the colorful inland ones that get too much attention. The world is destroying the natural birds of australia with stupid mutations and itll be too late soon..

  • I agree it will be genetically modified due to generation of captive breeding, however its colour is that of the wild bird. Without mutations natural selection would never exist in the wild. The process has been taken to extemes in some captive birds and for this reason breeders should endevour to also maintain the natural colour. As for mutations destroying the world...I think that is more due to the destruction of the neophemas natural habitat not captive mutations.

  • @BeamRider100 Sorry it's really not a rainbow Lorikeet. This bird is the size of a budgie and from the budgie family, I know because I have one.

  • That's what we call a Rainbow Lorikeet. That's not his normal voice calls, I can tell he's mimicking the other birds he can hear around him, indeed we can hear another bird off camera reply and recall. Parrots are good a mimicking sounds they here.

I don't know what part of Australia they call them "scarlet chested parrots" ?, I've never heard that before, they are called Rainbow Lorikeets in NSW.

  • Whatever it is, it's a beautiful creature.

  • lovely!!!

  • @blast4music Budgerigar parakeets stupid?! You must not know the same species I know. Sure, some are brighter than others, but the same can be said of any bird or animal--humans, included!

  • what gorgeous colors

  • @blast4music By saying a bourkes is more like a stupid budgie implies it. Perhaps due to poor sentence structure...but alas, this is the internet so that happens. Bourkes are very bright, and I find "stupid budgies" are only stupid and weak when you're buying from large pet stores since they buy them from breeders that mass produce them (Having worked in the industry, I can vouch for that 100%). Otherwise, they can be pretty intelligent little gems.

  • beautiful song! <3 what i wouldnt give to have this parakeet's tune rather than my male cockatiels!

  • wow. so... my budgie used to sing like that: we thought she learned from the outside birds, because our other budgie did not sing like that! is that the song of the grass parakeet, or did this one learn from other birds too?
