One of Rathmines' most prominent buildings is the Town Hall and its Clock Tower (designed by Sir Thomas Drew, completed in 1899). The building, now occupied by Rathmines College, once housed a town council for the Rathmines Township, made up of local businessmen and other eminent figures. The Rathmines Township was created by Act of Parliament in 1847. The area was later renamed "Rathmines and Rathgar" and expanded to take in the areas of Rathgar, Ranelagh, Sandymount and Milltown.

It opened in 1913 Architects: Batchelor & Hicks. http://t.co/m8oYoRD

  • @ClaireLKB: There is a school of music right next door on main road. I wonder if it extends to back of library where you see opened window? Mind you, there is always singing to be heard on Saturdays, irrespective of library closure. I was approached by two gardai cyclists as I was taking this amateur video footage. They were curious as to why I was filming and questioned me. I felt thoroughly mortified Perhaps it was all part of security measures connected to Queen and Obama's visit to ireland?

  • I always hear that choir singing. It's strange the way they always seem to be rehearsing when I walk past even though the library is closed now.
