How do I keep my bamboo from checking (cracking)? I have lovely Moso in the yard, good for making flutes, but the bamboo checks often. Any suggestions on how to keep the flute from checking?

Sargon,
Ideally, it's best to cure bamboo before using for shakuhachi. Immediately after harvesting, heat over very hot coals (turning slowly) until the bamboo turns light green. Wipe off the oils as they sweat to the surface. Then, leave out in the sun for a few weeks. Then store in the dark (well ventilated) for a few months or years or longer!

For flutes that are already made, keep them away from rapid temperature extremes. Above all, keep them from drying out. Keep them in a sealed bag when not playing. Then, hope!
Hope this helps!
