First round pen lesson

This is how we start a young horse on his first trip to the round pen. It is just our home-made mix of what we have learned from our horses and from the teachings of some of the masters. I look forward to your comments!

I do wish you guys good luck....but I'd certainly advise you to get your hands on a Clinton Anderson "round penning" video and learn about working horses' the correct way......saves lots of "wasted" time and you'll get much better results !!

Hi! Thanks for caring to post. Did you read the text? This is NOVICE training - not expert. We are not out to compete with Clinton Anderson or to mimic him. We are happy with the results, and I guess that's what counts - meeting our goals. They are at different levels and a different pace than others, but that is OK with us. "We are not about being perfect, we are about getting better." When we have time we, perhaps will study more and get better.

Your round pen looks nice and roomy. What is the measurement across the diameter?

60 feet. It looks wider due to the wide angle lense on the camera.

@NurturalHorse These were just my opinions & observations......actually if done right, you don't need to round pen a horse very much after he has been trained in one for a week or so.....maybe just for a tune up once in a while when the horse becomes a lil disrespectful.

@NurturalHorse OHH....sorry for the criticism....I thought you guys were trying to train the horse....why not just leave him with his herd buddies if you're just wanting to play in the snow......maybe just go sledding or skiing....!?!?

@NurturalHorse Knowing what you're doing just makes it better & easier for the horse.....with todays videos and clinicians/trainers willing to share their knowledge (for a small price) there is know excuse to subject a horse to a bunch of confusing attempts at training him......I've been there.....that ruins many horses willingness to please.....or do whats ask of him.....he's left confused and frustrated....like the trainer wanabe.

It's not that he's just "not listening to Jerry".....Jerry is doing nothing correctly to "ask the horse to do anything "different"......he never steps in front of the horses drive line to ask for a change of direction or to draw him into the center.....having the other person in the pen is ridiculous......what he is doing here will somewhat do something.....but me & the horse can't figure out what that might be.....lol...!!

Clinton Andersons' round pen training is one of the best sources of learning the fine art of round penning.....very clear....very "black & white".....teaches the horse "respect" in a very short length of time......if you follow the method......exactly like it's supposed to be done.

To many people don't seem to realize that little things make a huge huge difference.....where your body position is in comparison to the horses'.....you must be very "black & white" and you have to "move" the horse enough to make him "want" to come to the center to be with you (where he gets "rest")....for one thing, having the second person in the pen adds to the horses' confusion.......and the guy never clearly steps "in front" of the "drive line"......to encourage the horse to stop or turn .
