Hello on this Tuesday, the 13 day of May 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI news update.
More than 18 thousand people are reportedly buried under debris in China following yesterday's earthquake. The death toll there stands at more than 12 thousand. Rescue workers are trying to reach victims who are trapped despite roads being blocked by rocks and mudslides. A Chinese government official says his country welcomes foreign donations, but they're not ready for outside relief workers because their transportation system can't handle any additional traffic.
Senator Hillary Clinton is expecting a big win in West Virginia's primary today. The New York senator is ahead in that state by an average of 40 points in the most recent public opinion polls. Her rival, Senator Barack Obama, seemed to already acknowledge his loss in West Virginia and has no plans to be in the state this evening. Next up, the campaign trail moves to Kentucky and Oregon where residents there will vote in a week. Clinton is favored in Kentucky, while Obama is expected to do well in Oregon.
Meanwhile, Senator Barack Obama is scheduled to make a visit to Michigan tomorrow. It's his first stop there in 10 months since he pledged not to campaign in the state after it scheduled a primary in violation of national party rules. The Illinois senator is reportedly planning on moving 12 full-time staffers into Michigan. Analysts say the shift is an indication that Obama plans to hold onto the state in a general election campaign.
Violence in Baghdad has reportedly left at least 11 people dead. Another 20 are injured in clashes between U.S. troops and militiamen in Sadr City. No soldiers were apparently hurt in the incident. The fighting took place just hours after signing a ceasefire deal between the Iraqi government and Shia cleric Muqtada al Sadr.
