The K1s and K2s used are not your usual sprint boats. They are reinforced around the nose and on the bottom (to withstand rock scrapes).

Guys - this type of sport is very common in South Africa - racing K1 and K2 (and even K3) down rivers with rapids up to Cat. 3. Examples: the annual Dusi Canoe Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban (130km) - 2000 paddlers. Fish Marathon, Eastern Cape, 86km, two days - close to 2000 paddlers. The Umkomaas Marathon - biggest white water in the world for these types of boats, 85km, two days - maybe 400 paddlers (it's a very tough race!).
