I exported some short video clips as Filmstrip files, painted alpha channels over the actors in Photoshop, painted a series of abstract shapes on other Filmstrip files, and combined them all in After Effects with a few extra filters. It's not too tricky, but rotoscoping by hand becomes very tedious.
