Individual in capitalist societies experiences a material life mostly determined by the medium of commodity. The process of production and consumption in such societies does not have a direct relation with each other and then what is produced is not in fact what the individual requires generally. It is the logic of the market or the capital that creates a kind of mysterious relation between the commodity and the consumption. Market appears to create the needs of the consumer in a way that consumer believes that his/her needs are what the market has produced for him/her. In such a milieu, the use value of the commodity seems to replace itself with a fetishistic power of the commodity. This fetishtic nature of the consumer society underlines the fact that there is no real connection between the production and the consumption, the producer and the consumer or the laborer and his product.
This reality is evenly experienced in higher capitalist societies as well as in lower level capitalist societies where capitalism is still at a growing stage - in Europe and in Asia respectively. The use value of a commodity represents a certain human need. How ever in the capitalist market the use value and the exchange value of the commodity have huge difference and this shows the fetishtic character of the consumption.
In the context of Sri Lanka where the capitalist mode of production has been at a primary stage, men and women increasingly find their employment in foreign countries- Middle East and Europe- mostly as housemaid and laborers. Majority of these people who return to the country after a few years of service carry a huge amount of commodities with them that includes mostly the electronic equipments. Their exposure to the highly consumptive capitalist societies has pursued them to act fetishtically by buying more and more commodities that their real life has no real use of them. For instance people in the remote areas of the country, where at least basic infrastructure facilities like electricity have not been supplied, tend to gather these commodities and showcase in their homes. Their craving for the possession of certain commodities like, teliviosn sets, washing machines and fridge display the fetish character of the objects that the material life has real connection with them.
When people find the commodities that they have bought in pursue of desires that market created in them, despite the irrelevance of such objects to their existing condition of the material life, those goods are used for other purposes- for instance refrigerators are used as suitcases, washing machines as container of books and the television as a chair. The fetish objects projected by the market with a magical quality in them ultimately have become mere
