Actually Chulainn was not the kings dog, your mistaken. Setanta was invited by the king to a party hosted by the black smith Chulainn. Setanta wanted to finish playing though and came late but they forgot about him. Chulainns dog was therefore on guard. When Setanta came to the party Chulainns dog attacked him and Setanta easily killed him. Chulainn was horribly sad though so Chulainn agreed to take his dogs place. The dogs name wasnt Chulainn, Setanta was called "The Hound of Chulainn"

Cu Chulainn or Cuchulainn was an Irish hero born in Ireland in Ulster Northern kingdom in Ireland. He is also known mostly today as the Hound of Ulster his real name was Setanta, but after killing Chulainn the king of Ulsters dog. Setanta promised to take the dogs place until another dog could be trained. He is equal in Irish folk lore to Hercules and Achilles in Greek Mythology.
