(review) Adventure island was released in 1986 for the NES and numerous other consoles. It's a basic side-scroller in which you control Master Higgins (that's the name of the character), much like Super Mario Brothers, through 8 worlds with 4 levels each. You get various powerups and weapons through the course of the game, some are useful but others I can't even guess what they do. Now if only the controls were half as good as Mario : the walking and running are absolutely terrible : by nature you're constantly running to the right, so when it comes to stopping or returning it takes very long to stop and very long to speed back up again, so you're better off dodging enemies than waiting for them to pass.
One cool powerup is your skateboard : it makes you go faster and allows you take one hit before losing a life. One BIG problem with the skate is that you can't stop : you CAN slow down a bit but not stop or go left, this gets extremely frustrating when you're dealing with moving platforms, fast enemies or items that appear BEHIND you because there's no way to go back.
The white bars at the top of the screen indicate your energy : they go down depending of how much effort it takes to perform an action : running drains it the fastest while standing in one spot doesn't decrease it at all. Skating is preffered to running when possible as it takes less effort, conserving energy, and also the speed is doubled. The energy can be restored by collecting just about any item, but some restore more than others. Grab a milk bottle (labaled "M") for a complete energy bar.
At the end of each world you fight a boss which has a different head every time you defeat him and his head falls off. They get harder and harder to beat and take more and more hits as the game drags on.
In this video I am trying to complete the game as fast as possible, although I inevitably die and get slowed down a couple of times. The game was frustrating as all hell to play (let alone record) and the stages are really rehashes of one another only with more enemies. Some areas are SO HARD that I can't immagine how you could possibly beat this game on a real NES console with no save-states and continues. It's virtually impossible to beat on a real console. Final verdict : HARD, FRUSTRATING GAME.
Finally got this game for my NES but wow i remember it was hard but dam it is impossible on the NEs but i guess ill keep trying, just wondering is there any way to get extra lives?

@RAZACHILD101 If you watch all my ADV Island videos, in one part (I can't remember which) I do notify through an annotation when I get an extra life...it makes a specific sound....I think every 50.000 points...so to answer your question, yes you can get lives.
