@WolverineAndSloth Most possibly to attract night flying insects, so they can spread it's spores by tracking.

@dragom2009 it grows everywhere in the North America, on decaying wood.

@dragom2009 you can surely find Jackolanterns in in Europe as well. Thy fruit in the fall through winter mostly. :) I hope you find some, let me know if you do. Where are you from?
