This is part five of my absolute favorite musical of all time, "Company" by Stephen Sondheim. This is the PBS "Great Performances" recording of the 2006 Revival of "Company" directed by John Doyle, the director of the 2005 Revival of "Sweeney Todd" also by Stephen Sondheim. In both of these revivals there are no musicians, the actors play all of the instruments, very challenging, yet very effective. The star of this production of "Company" is Raul Esparza who plays Bobby, a seemingly happy Manhattan bachelor with a deep hidden sadness. The cast of this production shows extreme strength in the area of ensemble work. This production has one of the best interpretations of the song "Getting Married Today" I have ever heard, Heather Laws does an amazing job with it. The cast is as follows Bobby: Raul Esparza, Joanne: Barbara Walsh, Larry: Bruce Sabath, Amy: Heather Laws, Paul: Robert Cunningham, Sarah: Kristin Huffman, Harry: Keith Butterbaugh, Jenny: Leenya Rideout, David: Fred Rose, Susan: Amy Justman, Peter: Matt Castle, April: Elizabeth Stanley, Marta: Angel Desai, Kathy: Kelly Jeane Grant. This section includes the songs "Have I Got a Girl for You", "Someone is Waiting" and the beginning of "Another Hundred People".

  • @monster9500 hahahah yes i was about to comment about that.

  • @cjhealy1 Leonard Bernstein wasn't Sondheim's mentor?

  • Kelly Jean Grant is one hot redhead.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • @monster9500 When I saw the revival with Neil Patrick Harris in theatres, my friend and I looked at each other and busted out laughing at that part! We were expecting a full blown version of "Joanna" XD

  • Raul Esparza... oh my god i'm in love.

  • I saw this revival on Broadway in 2006 and thought Raul was absolutely amazing, altho I don't like this filmed performance much. Onstage he was so genuine and layered and in this clip he comes off a bit poised, like every line delivery is him trying to be ironic... but Raul is known to be a bit of a diva, camps it up.

I think the girl singing "Another Hundred People" (one of my FAVORITE theater songs) totally butchers it. Every word that starts with P sounds like a B when she says it!

  • "Have I got a girl for you" is almost a West Side Story flashback... Sondheim channelling his mentor there a little.

  • Did anyone else have a Sweeney flashback at 2:20?

  • The scene at 8:25 is one of my favorites in this whole production. Just beautiful. Love this musical. =]
