It has been 19 years since the US and Russia signed the first Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (Start) which helped secure an end to the arms race during the Cold War.

Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, and Barack Obama, his US counterpart, are set to meet in the Prague on Thursday to sign a new disarmament treaty that will replace the one that expired in December.

The Start deal aims to reduce the number of nuclear warheads in both countries by 30 per cent.

Al Jazeera's Neave Barker reports from Moscow on the treaty that could affect the "overall situation of the planet."
