In 2010, we followed University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) Business Economics student Andrew Smith of Falmouth, Maine at his student internship in the marketing department at Sugarloaf ski resort, located 45 minutes from campus. The University has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Sugarloaf and the resort has employed many UMF student interns over the years. Under the guidance of his on-site supervisors, Communications Mgr. Ethan Austin and Dir. of Sales & Marketing Brad Larsen, Andrew gained valuable hands-on experience as he applied the business and economics theories he learned in the classroom -- as well as a passion for skiing -- to real-world marketing projects at one of New England's premier ski resorts. At UMF, all students are encouraged to participate in internships like this as a way to connect classroom studies to what could be their future work, while strengthening their resume and making valuable professional contacts. In fact, in any given semester about 70% of all UMF students participate in some sort of hands-on learning experience. It should also be noted that internships like this one at Sugarloaf (where students earn college credits as well as a paycheck) are required in the University's new interdisciplinary Outdoor Recreation Business Administration (ORBA) program.
