I just did this short video of people visiting Asakusa (actually "Sensouji") a huge Temple in Asakusa in Tokyo on new Years day 2012. Thousands of people visit to celebrate New Year, they throw some coins and say a prayer for the coming year, hence the temple helpers in the wire protection cages in case of stray coins! If you want to know more about how Japanese people celebrate New Year in this way, please google "Hatsumode". Happy New Year by the way.
