The Man That Got Away Barbra Streisand

My knee jerk reaction would be to say JUDY OWNS THIS! But Barbra has just as long a history with Harold Arlen as Judy. Besides, although we don't see it (edited), Barbra did a very poignant and respectful intro to Judy (and Liza, whom she both adores) before she sang it. Having said that, in my humble opinion Judy's rendition will always be THE definitive version that even Streisand cannot touch.

ONLY. judy garland can sing this.

If Judy tried to sing People we all would be saying the same things we are saying about Barbra right now. No one else can touch that classic song.

I love ya Barbra but Judy's is supreme to this. Maybe if Barbra had sang this 30 years earlier it would have been better. Her voice is just so aged.

Will everyone quit comparing these two iconic female vocalists. There is Garland and there is Streisand, end of! However, to say that Barbra Streisand ruiined this song is ridiculous.

Of course this is Judy's song, but I saw Barbra sing this live and it was a breathtaking tribute to Judy with her daughter Liza in the audience. Barbra always speaks very highly of Judy.

@malmaquia i like judys better, but they both sing with the heart

Yes, Harold Arlen, who co-wrote this with Ira Gershwin, loved the way Judy AND Barbra performed his songs. Nobody BUT Barbra could challenge Judy's original rendition and "get away with it"....

I like very much Barbra... but this song is Judy Garland for ever!....Judy's rendition will always be THE definitive version that even Streisand cannot touch!!!!!!

@karlakor : Yikes. not sure if she'd make such a comment. However, I'd might have to agree but in fairness there were so many great female singers (especially in that era) it's almost criminal to give such a title exclusively to just one singer.

@twilson11208 I think that Barbra Streisand once said that Ella Fitzgerald was the greatest singer ever, and that there is no one even in second place. Has anyone else heard this? I hope I'm not putting words in Streisand's mouth.
@MrDACooling so, this movie is in some way a sort of biography & she transfere all her pain, sufferings & broken heart to this song... that is the power she gaves to this, because she was suffering the lost of a man, dreams & her very true love the only one really important, even in her older years she kept crying the lost of him
