On the morning of Sunday, June 21st, a multitude of faithful gathered at Cerro de los Angeles, the monument marking the geographic centre of Spain, to participate in the consecration of Spain to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The moving ceremony coincided with the 90th anniversary of the first consecration carried out by King Alfonso XIII in the same place.Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela, Archbishop of Madrid, presided over the Mass. Also attending the celebration was Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, who, having travelled from Rome for the occasion, was enthusiastically welcomed by the faithful during the vigil that preceded the event. 30 bishops, 20 vicars and more than 250 priests also participated in the ceremony.During the homily, Cardinal Rouco Varela highlighted Spains need for forgiveness, reconciliation and peace, and questioned whether these gifts could be achieved without Christ. The question, he said, is all the more dramatic when we see what is being done to a nation that has always been known for its fidelity to the Catholic faith.
