No, it was about his desire to leave Genesis. The line about scenery is, I think, a play on words - it can mean you feel taken for granted, but since their sets and costumes were elaborate, I think the meaning was double. Walking out of the machinery had to do with the fact that he felt the whole recording and touring to be a grind...He wanted to leave Genesis to be with his wife and sick newborn daughter.
I used to play on Solsbury Hill when I was a child and we were often at PG's house - at the time I just thought Peter was silly since because there were Buzzards not eagles there ... ah sweet innocence of a six year!
Could be, KernowKopia - I don't know if PG was doing drugs back at the time. (Looking at the costumes from the Genesis days, it's hard to imagine he wasn't!!) It's good that people can relate to the song without necessarily having taken drugs themselves. I guess it might help, tho... ;-)
