Peter Coffin, Untitled (Shepard-Risset Glissando with Color), 2006, 16mm film loop with optical sound
About this work:
This work involves a film loop of gradually changing colours and sound, creating an installation that envelopes the space. The film projector is positioned in the corner of the space and projects into the room and skewed onto the wall. The colour changes subtly and slowly through the visible colour spectrum while corresponding with the tone of the accompanying sound (Shepard-Risset tone) according to Isaac Newtons R,O,Y,G,B,I,V (first published in his book Optiks (1730) in which R = the note A, O = B, Y = C, etc.). A Shepard-Risset tone is also known as a barber pole tone which is a kind of audio illusion. The sound appears to be ascending continuously and without repetition, producing a hypnotic effect. This piece acts as an audio and visual representation of infinity, or a kind of cornucopia colour spectrum with corresponding sound.
Nice!
