This recipe and method of making banana pudding was taught to me by my grandmother. To me, it's the best banana pudding in the world but I guess that's because I grew up eating it. Follow these steps and try it out for yourself. I very highly doubt you will be disappointed. It's really not that hard to make but it is a little time consuming when you're standing there stirring for 15 mins. Please don't be tempted to ramp up the heat in order to save time. If you do, the egg yolks will scorch to the bottom of the pan and not only ruin the flavor, but also will be a pain to wash off the pot. Trust me, the 15 mins of utter boredom is worth it.

Measurements:
2&1/2 cups whole milk
2 egg yolks
2/3 cups of sugar
2 Tbsp flour
1&1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 or 3 bananas
Nilla wafers

By the way, I made an editing error and accidentally cut out the part where I added the vanilla extract. It's added immediatly after taking the pudding off the heat and it's 1&1/2 teaspoons. I was too lazy to go back and fix it...

  • Can I use evaporated milk?

  • @gunnersphere No, I'm pretty sure that won't work. I've never tried it, but there is a big difference between milk and evaporated milk.

  • mmm then idk what happen...what type of milk did u use?

  • @kiki84ist Whole milk. The only thing I can think of that the problem might be is that your stove may heat lower than mine...in which case it might take longer for it to thicken or you're not heating it long enough. It has to come to a boil but you have to bring it to a boil SLOWLY. If you scorch it, it will taste like burnt eggs. I would try turning the heat up to 4 1/2 or stirring longer than the 15 min. The 15 min is just approximately how long it takes. It may take a little longer.

  • I followed all the directions and it never got thicker...disappointed...nx time I will just get the recipe from box

  • @kiki84ist Then you did something wrong.... the recipe isn't the problem... you are. I'm the one who's disappointed, I thought I made the directions Perfectly clear.

  • The music is a bit too much.

  • Now THIS is how real nana puddin is done! Never use packaged pudding - l can always taste the difference! I just use cornstarch instead of flour. It's lighter in texture & flavor. I also prefer more bananas & prettier finished product.

  • Your finessed product looked ok, But i think you should have spent more time on placing the cookies and bananas and not throned them in a pile.

  • This is the old school way and it does taste better!

  • i almost make mine like this. how ever i use the white part of the egg put sugar and mix it to a merain. put that on the top and put it in the oven til light brown. i only added a teaspoon of flour to the mix and a tablespoon of vanilla while its on the stove. my mom and dad make it this way. yours look cool too!

  • I forgot to add that I used evaporated milk and did the double boiler thing too. I wish I could give you 10 thumbs up.

  • This is my second time using your recipe and it turned out perfect.

  • Looks awesome!!! I must try this recipe.
